VITAC's realtime captioner employees are skilled court reporters who specialize in the exacting task of translating video into text "on the fly." VITAC accepts as applicants skilled realtime reporters with consistently high translation rates and the dictionary range to support translation of broadcast TV material.

Scope
VITAC's in-house realtime captioners are fulltime employees who work at our Pittsburgh (Canonsburg, Pa.) headquarters. Our remote captioners operate from their home locations.

Offline captioners are post-production specialists responsible for transcribing, placing, and timing captions that are accurate and appropriate in style for prerecorded television shows.

Scope
At VITAC, they work on programs that air on the Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, the Travel Channel, PBS, BBC America, Sundance Channel, Lifetime, and many others.

Production Coordinator

Production coordinators play a vital role in VITAC's Pittsburgh (Canonsburg, PA) realtime captioning department.

Scope
Our production coordinators are responsible for research, script preparation, setup, and on-air continuity of closed captioning for more than 220,000 hours of programming per year for CNN, HLN, MSNBC, CNBC, NHK, The Tonight Show, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, The CBS Early Show, the Weather Channel, about 20 national and regional sports networks, and many others.

Here, our Realtime Captioner Training Manager, Amy Bowlen, has assembled answers to questions that she's heard most often from aspiring captioners.

Qualifications Candidates must demonstrate:

  • Advanced English grammar skills
  • Typing speed of > 50 words per minute
  • Computer literacy, including Windows proficiency
  • Ability to manage multiple daily deadlines
  • Close attention to detail
  • Availability for flexible scheduling ("television hours," including weekends)

We prefer a degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or a related field.

VITAC also hires Translators and Quality Control experts for Multilanguage projects.
