Canada Calls for Comments about Closed Captioning


With a new captioning quality standards on the horizon, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) is asking for input about the use of closed captioning in  English- and French-language programming. In order to create Closed Captioning Quality Standards that will meet the needs of the public, the CRTC is looking for information about:

  • defining a captioning error          1
  • setting the maximum captioning error rate for live programming
  • deciding how captioning errors should be corrected in a re-broadcast of live programming

Deadlines for comments about English-language captioning standards are due by October 14, 2011 and input about French-language captioning standards are due by September 14, 2011.
