Our captions for prerecorded programming meet Federal Communications Commission (FCC) guidelines for offline captioning and are offered in three styles: roll-up captions, pop-on captions, and pop-center captions.
All dialogue, sound effects, and lyrics appear as two or three lines of text placed in a fixed position at the bottom or top of the screen (depending on graphics). Change of speaker is indicated by speaker ID or simply with “>>.” Roll-up style typically is used for interviews and how-to programs or for budgetary considerations.

Federal law prohibits obscene, indecent, and profane content from being broadcast on radio or television. However, offensive language is in the eye of the beholder, and the definition of profanity varies from individual to individual and broadcaster to broadcaster. Justice Potter Stewart summed it up best during the Supreme Court’s 1964 landmark case on obscenity when he wrote that it’s difficult to define obscenities, but that “I know it when I see it.”
